The Canadian Institute of Management now offers two specific programs of study, Certification in Supervisory Management (CSM) and Certification and Designation in Management and Administration (C.I.M.). The CSM program is designed to serve those persons who are just beginning their careers, or those who wish to qualify for their first supervisory role. The C.I.M program is designed to expose members-on-course to the major areas of managerial responsibility and to enhance management skills of current supervisors and managers.

CSM and C.I.M. COURSES

Introduction to Management: Introduces the member-on-course to the concept of management by exporing the roles and functions of managers in the Canadian business environment. Topics include planning, organizing, leadership, controlling, management ethics, decision-making tools and techniques defining interpersonal communications, motivation and organizational behaviour.

Managerial Communications: is a "hands on" course covering communication theory, aspects of written communication and introduces the member-on-course to public speaking.

Canadian Business Law: provides the member-on-course with an overview of Canadian business law and an understanding of basic legal terminology. The major emphasis is on contract law, since contracts are the foundation of all commercial transactions. Topics will include a study of the requirements for creating a legally binding contract, as well as some common errors to be avoided. Various types of contracts with special uses will also be examined.

Human Resources Management: will focus on such topics as the challenges of Human Resources Management, environmental challenges, challenge of discrimination, recruitment, selection, orientation, performance appraisal, training & development, compensation management, union/management framework.

Managerial Accounting: focuses on the uses of accounting data. Concepts and procedures of financial accounting are examined for an understanding of that role of accounting in both internal and external reporting.

Marketing Management: covers the concepts of the marketing mix,: product, price, place and promotion. Considerations required for development of a successful marketing stratagy are discussed.

Managerial Finance: supplies a broad familiarity with the field of managerial financial and a solid basis for financial decisions to further incorporate objectives in the area of capital management, capital budgetting, short and long term funding and the cost of capital.

Strategic Analysis: focuses on Canadian and International business cases, developing a "general management" perspective in decision making and introducing concepts useful to the analysis of management problems. A wide range of business cases examine corporate opportunities, competencies, asperations and responsibilities. Members-on-course assess the objectives of a corporation, develop a strategy for achieving them and provide recommendations for implementation.

Project Management: This course introduces students to the concepts currently being used in the emerging professional field of Project Management. Project Management is designed to build and expand the foundation of knowledge needed by successful managers.

Students will be awarded a ‘Certificate in Management and Administration’ upon completion of eight study courses (8 credits) as specified by the Institute with a minimum grade of 60% in each course.
Candidates will be eligible to apply for the C.I.M. (Certified in Management) designation once they have acquired two (2) years of management/administration experience.
In order to be granted the designation, candidates will be required to submit an application, along with two letters of reference and a current resume within six (6) years of completing the prescribed studies.
Students currently enrolled in the program will be awarded their designation upon completion.
